PODC Advances Global Ocean Data Collaboration Through UNESCO Endorsement

Padjadjaran Oceanographic Data Centre (PODC) has officially received endorsement from Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. The endorsement recognizes PODC as an endorsed Decade Action contributing to global efforts in strengthening ocean science, coastal observation, and accessible marine data collaboration.

The endorsement was formally communicated through an official letter issued by IOC-UNESCO on 6 March 2026, addressed to Mr. Noir P. Purba of Padjadjaran University. Within the Ocean Decade framework, PODC will be attached to the endorsed programme CoastPredict - Observing and Predicting the Global Coastal Ocean an international initiative focused on advancing integrated coastal ocean observation and prediction systems.

PODC was established as a platform dedicated to supporting oceanographic data accessibility, scientific collaboration, and digital innovation in the marine sector. Through its initiatives, the platform aims to connect researchers, students, institutions, and coastal stakeholders in developing more open, collaborative, and sustainable ocean knowledge systems.

The endorsement from IOC-UNESCO highlights the growing importance of open and accessible ocean data management, co-design approaches, and cross-sector collaboration in addressing global marine challenges. As part of the Ocean Decade ecosystem, PODC is expected to contribute toward strengthening scientific engagement, encouraging knowledge exchange, and supporting data-driven ocean sustainability initiatives at both regional and global scales.

Through this recognition, PODC also joins a broader international network of endorsed Ocean Decade actions and communities working toward the shared vision of the science we need for the ocean we want.

Moving forward, PODC remains committed to expanding its role as a collaborative ocean data platform by supporting scientific communication, interdisciplinary partnerships, and inclusive access to marine information for the wider community.
